Meeting your Online-Date for the First Time

If you've been using Dating for Disabled for a while and met another member that you like, at some point you will probably arrange to go on a real date. Here are some tips that will help you take your relationship from the virtual world of online dating, into the real one:

1. Arrange to meet in a public place, and make your own way there (and tell someone where you've gone and who you are with). Safety first! You can read more about safety when using online disabled dating sites here:

If at any point during the date you feel uncomfortable or unsafe get up and leave.

2. Meet for something cheap like a beer or a cup of coffee, and only have one drink! This way there is no awkwardness about who pays the check because it was inexpensive. Also, if you are going on a lot of dates it can end up being quite pricey (plus, if the date is really awful, you can leave after you've finished your drink).

3. Keep things light and have fun! It's only the first date and you want to leave wanting more. After all, you've only been talking online, and now you want to get to know each-other in person.

4. Make sure the place is wheelchair accessible if need be. After all, on dating for disabled there are many disabled people, some of whom are wheelchair users, or have some sort of mobility challenge, so take that into account when choosing an activity or venue. Find out ahead of time what your date's restrictions are (as far as activity/ food or drink).

5. Try and avoid topics like: exes, politics and religion. All of these things can end up being controversial and leave you both with a bitter taste in your mouth.

6. You don't have to think of talking points, but going over their profile one last time before your date can give you an "ice-breaker" to start the conversation flowing. Also, if you talk on a regular basis just carry on chatting about a conversation you started online. Just imagine you've already met them before, and you're picking up where you left off.

7. If it's the first time you're going on a date with someone you met on an online dating site like dating for disabled, and even if it isn't your first time, you may be nervous! So try doing something to unwind before: watch an episode of your favorite comedy on TV, have a tub of ice-cream or call your mum. Do whatever you need so you'll show up relaxed.

8. Come with no expectations- you're there to see if you like them! That said, they may not like you back (but hey, if they don't that's their loss!). If it goes well you can arrange a second date.

9. End the evening on your terms and leave when you feel ready to go.
